The November 13, 2012, One Direction revealed to the Today Show to have their own movie, which would be directed by Morgan Spurlock and be based mainly on his journey around the world with his second tour Take Me Home Tour. Then on January 17, 2013, moved to Tokyo, Japan to begin the first recordings of the documentary. Two days later, held an event called Team 1D Japan Party, which was attended by 20 000 people. There, performed a portion of "One Way or Another (Teenage Kicks)", which is then revealed that appear in the film.
Weeks later, on February 8, the morning show Daybreak News released a preview of the documentary which could see little scenes of One Direction having fun, telling their stories behind the camera and working on their presentations. Two days later, the quintet officially published it in his VEVO account on youtube. With the release of this, it was thought that the final title would 1D3D. However, on March 18, revealed to be called This is Us.
Since February, One Direction asked his followers to pickpocket photos of himself to his website to be able to appear in the promotional poster for the film, which would be displayed in a mosaic. This poster was unveiled on April 18 by Gordon Smarth Sun newspaper writer.
